UPSC PYQ Analysis: 30 Years of Previous Year Questions (1995-2024)
We analyzed every UPSC Prelims question from the last 30 years. Here's what the data tells us about exam trends, subject weightage, and how to prepare smarter.
The Numbers
Mission UPSC's database contains 3,274+ previous year questions from UPSC Civil Services Prelims exams held between 1995 and 2024. These questions span 8 subjects and 109 topics.
Subject-wise Breakdown
Here's how UPSC distributes questions across subjects:
Key Trends Over 30 Years
1. Environment & Ecology — The Biggest Winner
In the late 1990s, Environment had just 2-3 questions per exam. By 2024, it regularly gets 15-20 questions. This is the most dramatic shift in UPSC Prelims history. Any serious aspirant must prioritize this subject.
2. Polity & Economy — Consistent Heavyweights
Together, Polity and Economy account for 33.6% of all questions. These two subjects alone can make or break your Prelims. They have also shown a gradual increase over the years.
3. General Science — Declining Importance
Pure science questions (Physics, Chemistry, Biology basics) have decreased. UPSC now asks more application-based science questions often clubbed with Environment or Current Affairs.
4. Current Affairs Integration — Everything is Current Affairs Now
The biggest change is that UPSC now frames static subject questions with a current affairs angle. A History question might reference a recent archaeological discovery. This makes pure static preparation insufficient.
Do Questions Repeat in UPSC?
Not word-for-word, but concepts definitely repeat. Our analysis found that certain topics appear every 2-3 years with slightly different framing. For example:
- Constitutional Amendment questions appear in 28 out of 30 years
- Vedic Period questions have appeared 12 times since 1995
- Environmental conventions/protocols repeat every 2-3 years
- Fundamental Rights vs DPSP comparison appears ~every 3 years
This is why PYQ practice is the single most effective preparation strategy. By solving 30 years of PYQs, you cover 80%+ of the concepts UPSC tests.
How to Use This Data for Your Preparation
